序言 Festivals are markers of time, dividing the year into many periods. These periods constitute our lives and
festivals are highlights in the course of our living. At festivals, people celebrate good harvests, pray for favorable weather for their crops, or try to fend off evil spirits in the hope of bringing tranquility to the home.
China has a long history of agriculture, so at their earliest stages its festivals were intimately tied up with farming. The calendar used in times gone by-the lunar calendar-was formulated in accordance with farming seasons, and, based on this calendar, people would plant in spring, plough in summer, harvest in fall and store their crops in winter. During breaks between the farming seasons, people would celebrate harvests and pray for good weather for the coming farming season. It was during this process that festivals came into being. Even now, traditional Chinese festivals are celebrated in accordance with the lunar calendar.
