序言 Famous old Chinese poems we translate, Whose versions are the nicest down to date. Just like you,we love genuine beauty, And we read literature Of first rate. For the West to enjoy Chinese poetry, Wehavemademuch effortto openthe gate. Time may bury our youth without mercy, But our desire for leaming will not abate.Poetry is the refinement of human language, composed in regular rhymed forms. It isused like other literary genres to express human thoughts and feelings, and reflectsalmost all the aspects of social life.It has in it the beauty of language,of artisticconception and of music.Since the appearance of literature, written or oral,in thehuman community, poetry,as a finer part of it,has been used for relentless pursuit oftruth, goodness and beauty, and for merciless denouncement of falsehood, evil andugliness as well.Chinese poetry has a comparatively long history and has spread farand wide.In fact,we might say, poetry is above all else the summing up of daily life.As early as in the Xia Dynasty of about four thousand years ago,for instance, thelaboring people of China summed up the repetition of their everyday labor by sayingthe lines:“Start to work at sunrise, and retire at sunset”(日出而作,日落而息).Beforethe Spring and Autumn Period there appeared such lines as:“Water birds in pairs overthe isle are warbling;A graceful girl a gentleman enjoys courting”(关关雎鸠,在河之洲。窈窕淑女,君子好逑).It can be said that four-character poems of this kind, which continued to exist till the Tang Dynasty, were the embryonic form of Chinese poetry. Many of the ancient Chinese poems, familiar to every educated household, have been repeatedly cited and recited through the ages, exerting an in-depth influence on thefrom care and laden with no intention to go profit hunting, the place where he built hissimple shelter and all around him seemed more quiet than expected. The place thatbelonged to him was quieter than the officialdom.
文摘 the place where he built hissimple shelter and all around him seemed more quiet than expected. The place thatbelonged to him was quieter than the officialdom, indeed. The first six lines are aconfession of the poet’S mood and a description of the natural scenes around, used toserve the main idea of the poem“his discovery of the true meaning of life”.
I grow beans at the foot of the mountain southern,Bean seedlings are sparse but weeds are wanton.
To weed the cropland I get up in the morning early,Hoe on shoulder in moonlight,I return in no hurry.
Lined with rampant grass and trees is the narrow path,My clothes are wet in an evening dew bath.
What matter when they are wet through if I please,So long as this conforms to my wish for pastoral ease. The poet(see No.7)and the background note:There are five poems under the titleReturning tO My Pastoral L/fe,of which this is the third. It was written in the secondyear(406 A.D.)after the poet withdrew from officialdom to a reclusive life.
