Where did he get all those scars on his body? And what happened to Hope and Cady's friendship? Told in alternating chapters from the intimate viewpoints of the three high-school seniors, the story slips gradually back in time, chapter by chapter, from the prom in June to the previous New Year's Eve, revealing a web of secrets, betrayal, power plays, love, and grief. The lengthy narrative is told in reverse; a character remembers something, then later the reader discovers what happened. A pity the solution to the mystery relies on a plot contrivance: Hope finds Lucas' journal. The whole may seem confusing, but each chapter is like a story in itself, filled with sizzling characters, fast dialogue, casual sex ("Everyone does it"), and plenty of contemporary trappings--from iPods to designer clothes.
