How I came to stop worrying and love science
I have a confession to make. I really hated science from about the seventh grade on. In college, I majored in subjects as non- scientific as possible: English and French literature. I took only the bare minimum of science classes, substituting math whereever possible and avoiding labs like the plague. So what business do I have writing science books such as Wild Weather and creating science games such as NOVA True Science? As I said, I hated science. I know what it feels like. I've been there. Now, I love science. And I want kids to love it too. That goes for all kids--not just the "scientific" types. What changed my view? I came to love science by combining it with my other love--literature and writing. The more I read and wrote about science, the more fascinated I became with it. In Wild Weather, my goal is to share that fascination and excitement with young children before it's too late. They'll read about scientists who put their lives on the line, flying through hurricanes and chasing tornados, all for a few kilobytes of data. They'll look at the sky and see more than just puffy clouds on a blue backdrop. They'll understand how and why a small piece of our world works. Most importantly, I hope they'll finish each book wanting to understand more.
