In 1851, five wells were planned for city water supply. Funded as a public works item,the project marked the beginning of water supply services in Hong Kong. From 1860onwards, extensive public water schemes have been masterminded. In order to keeppace with the growing need for water supply and to tackle the problem of dwindlingavailability of land sites for reservoirs, Hong Kong has been looking for new watersources and novel methods of water storage actively since the 1960s. On one hand,supply of water from Guangdong commenced while on the other, two huge reservoirswere successfully constructed out of the sea at Plover Cove and High Island.
The water system we have today is the fruit of one and a half century of hard work.Our forefathers and the Water Supplies Department have made untiring effort in over-coming obstacles faced by a territory lack of natural resources and once called a"barren rock". In the years to come, as a commitment to the community, the WaterSupplies Department will continue "To excel in satisfying customers' needs for theprovision of quality water services".
This is the first set of embossed commemorative stamps issued in Hong Kong. To echowith the water droplet motif, embossing and spot varnishing methods were applied togive an extra touch to the transparent and flowing quality of water.
