Grade 3-5 - In this novel by Julie Bertogna, Wayne and Wendy Potts love their parents but don't have much faith in their money-making schemes since their numerous endeavors have rarely been successful. Although the goat farm and the goat cheese factory both failed, the Potts come home with a used ice cream van and are sure they'll hit it big this time. Things look a little dicey at first when Mr. Potts creates ice cream flavors like Stingy Strawberry (made of strawberries and hot peppers), Cheesy Peasmint, Chocwobble, and Marshmallow Squidge, but when some Fizzbomb Sherbert gets mixed in, the ice cream becomes a hit. All is not smooth sailing for the Potts family though. They discover that the ice cream van, named Macaroni, is a magical van with a mind of its own. Soon the children find themselves and their naughty pet goat Gina on the first of several adventures as they try to soothe Macaroni, who is homesick for the seashore. Veteran BBC television actress Sophie Aldred gives each character an individual voice filled with enthusiasm. British vocabulary such as windscreen (windshield), bonnet (hood of the car), and queue (line) might be confusing at first, but can be understood in context. A fun-filled addition to any collection. - Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL
