Book Description
Fantasy and philosophy, symbolism and social history.

The imaginative breadth and the intellectual depth of The Wild Ass's Skin make it one of the greatest of Balzac's 'Etudes philosophiques'. With its central symbol of the magic piece of shagreen, it expresses the peculiarly Balzacian idea of the human will and dramatises with startling urgency the choice between ruthless self- gratification and asceticism, between vice and virtue, between dissipation and restraint. The symbolism is powerful but not overpowering: shrewd psychology, superbly chiselled dialogue and the sheer energy of the descriptive passages -- the gambling den, the orgy, the devastating finale--give The Wild Ass's Skin a compelling and forceful realism.

By capturing both the nuances of Balzac's irony and the boldness of his prose style, this fine translation by Herbert J. Hunt allows the English reader to appreciate the inimitable exuberance of Balzac at his best.

作者简介 Balzac was born in 1799, the son of a civil servant. At the age of thirty - heavily in debt and with an unsucessful past behind him - he started work on the first of what were to become a total of ninety novels and short stories that make up The Human Comedy. He died in 1850.
