I arranged to have hismother bring him to work, met them in the park-ing lot and invited them both to celebrate his re-turn to work. Stevie was thinner and paler, butcouldn't stop grinning as he pushed through the doorsand headed for the back room where his apronand busing cart were waiting. "Hold up there,Stevie, not so fast," I said. I took him and hismother by their arms. "Work can wait for a minute. To celebrate you coming back, breakfast for youand your mother is on me."
I led them toward a large corner booth at therear of the room. I could feel and hear the restof the staff following behind as we marchedthrough the dining room. Glancing over myshoulder, I saw booth after booth of grinning truck-ers empty and join the procession. We stopped infront of the big table. Its surface was covered withcoffee cups, saucers and dinner plates, all sittingslightly crooked on dozens of folded paper napkins."First thing you have to do, Stevie, is clean up thismess," I said. I tried to sound stern. Stevie lookedat me, and then at his mother, then pulled out oneof the napkins. It had "Something for Stevie"printed on the outside. As he picked it up, two $10bills fell onto the table.
Stevie stared at the money, then at all the nap-kins peeking from beneath the tableware, each withhis name printed or scrawled on it. I tumed to hismother. "There's more than $10,000 in cash andchecks on that table, all from truckers and truck-ing companies that heard about your problems.Happy Thanksgiving." Well, it got real noisy aboutthat time, with everybody hollering andshouting, and there were a few tears, as well.
But you know what's funny? While everybodyelse was busy shaking hands and hugging eachother, Stevie, with a big, big smile on his face, wasbusy clearing all the cups and dishes from the table.
Best worker I ever hired.
