Six years later, they had a baby boy and named him Eldrick－a made-up name that had an E for Earl at the beginning and a K for Kultida. That way, he would always have his parents at his side. It was the nickname of a brave and heroic South Vietnamese officer name Nguyen Phong, who had been Earl's friend and had saved his life on more than one occasion.
Life for the Woods family got a little easier as time passed, but not much. Whenever they went shopping or took a walk, they felt the eyes of their neighbors upon them, and they could sense the hate. Tiger experienced this racial prejudice on his first day of kindergarten. Some older boys tied him to a tree, threw stones at him, and called him terrible names. This was not the first time Tiger had been singled out because of the color of his skin; it had also happened on the golf course.
