Grades 6-10--This title focuses on the warrior class of Japan from their rise during the Heian Period (794-1185) to their decline in the 1860s. The author does an excellent job of describing their lives and country during this period. She examines Japanese history, culture, beliefs and society, and the legacy of the samurai. Highlighted, boxed articles add detail. There are numerous quality color photos of current times and reproductions of old masterpieces, all with informative captions. Although most unfamiliar words are explained contextually, there is a three-page glossary. This appealing presentation provides detail and artwork not found in older books on the topic.

Reviewed with Kathryn Hinds' Venice and Its Merchant Empire.

Gr. 5-8. From the Cultures of the Past series, these handsome volumes offer good, balanced overviews of distinctive cultures. Hinds traces the history of Venice from Roman times through the establishment of the republic and empire to its decline as a political power. The heart of the book is the depiction of Venice during the Renaissance: its economic base, social structure, religion, architecture, music, and art. Clearly written, the discussion wisely does not presume prior knowledge of subjects, such as the beliefs of Catholics. Japan introduces the ideals, practices, history, arts, spiritual life, and lasting influence of the samurai warriors. Schomp offers a well-organized overview of the subject as well as interesting sidebars on topics such as famous samurai women, the traditional tea ceremony, and kamikaze pilots. Both books are greatly enhanced by many richly colored and beautifully reproduced works of art and by photographs of artifacts and historical sites. Each book ends with a time line, a glossary, and lists of books and Web sites. Carolyn Phelan
