The Obstacle is the Way has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do.
Its many fans include a former governor and movie star (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a hip hop icon (LL Cool J), an Irish tennis pro (James McGee), an NBC sportscaster (Michele Tafoya), and the coaches and players of winning teams like the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Cubs, and University of Texas men’s basketball team.
The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”
Ryan Holiday shows us how some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck.
If you’re feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era.
From the Hardcover edition.

感觉没有想象中那么好
Wow, what an incredible book. I stumbled across Ryan Holiday on a few different podcasts I listen to, and I am so glad that I did. I really didn't know anything about stoicism before this book(and his podcasts). The philosophy is incredibly relevant today even though it's over 2000 years old. Ryan does a great job using historical figures, events and events to illustrate how relevant it is. He delivers the message in such a powerful and intelligent way but without being pretentious. I think a lot of people associate philosophy with pretentiousness, inaccessibility and a lack of being actionable. This book is the opposite of all those things. You can apply the lessons taught in this book to your life immediately and forever. I will revisit this book frequently and dig further in the stoics.
It's war of art meets mastery. This book is good read for getting over yourself, complaining, and doing something about your problems. I feel that this book was very practical, applicable(especially in today's society), and concise about stories of turning adversity into an advantage of examples from bad asses throughout history. Ryan does a great job of keeping the biographical examples brief and concise, then straight to the point of the lesson in each chapter. Ryan in a sense, achieved what a lot of other authors who write about similar subjects did but better and more concise. It's an easy read and is a useful reminder for us all when we feel like the chips are down, that we can always flip the tables. It will definitely be a book I will always turn back to.
The most actionable advice from a self-help book that I've seen. I don't know the motivations of the author, but it doesn't matter. So much usable material packed into one place...my version is highlighted and marked up and I open it up to a random page whenever I need some inspiration.
So many years, so much pop-psychobabble, yet the ancients had the most pragmatic approach all along. Makes sense, when you stop to think of how much harder and less predictable life was.
