Weallhaveininterestinpreservingourfreedomanddemocraticwayoflife.Attheveryleast，then，schoolsshouldprovideinstructionintheethicalandsocialvaluesrequiredforourdemocracytosurvive-particularlythevaluesofrespectandtolerance.Respectforindividualpersonsisabasicethicalvaluethatrequiresustoacknowledgethefundamentalequalityofallpeople，atenetofademocraticsociety.Toleranceofdifferencesamongindividualsandtheirviewpointsisrequiredtoactualizemanyofourbasicconstitutionalrights-includinglife，liberty，pursuitofhappiness，andfreedomofspeechandreligion.Whilerespectandtolerancearetheminimalvaluesthatschoolsshouldteach，thelistshouldideallygofurther-toincludecaring，compassion，andwillingnesstohelponeanother.Ademocracymightsurvivewithoutthesevalues，butitwouldnotthrive.Respectandtolerancewithoutcompassion，itseemstome，breedacoolaloofnessthatunderminesourhumanity，andleavesthoseintheworstpositiontosuffermoreandsufferalone-anunhealthystateforanysociety.
Admittedly，schoolsshouldavoidadvocatingparticularviewpointsoncontroversialmoralissuessuchasabortionorcapitalpunishment.Instructiononissueswithclearspiritualorreligiousimplicationsisbestlefttoparentsandchurches.Evenso，schoolsshouldteachstudentshowtoapproachthesekindsofissues-byhelpingstudentstorecognizetheircomplexityandtoclarifycompetingpointsofview.Indoingso，schoolscanhelpbreedcitizenswhoapproachcontroversyintherationalandresponsiblewayscharacteristicofahealthydemocracy.
Insum，schoolsshouldbyallmeansrefrainfromindoctrinatingouryoungpeoplewithparticularviewpointoncontroversialquestionsofmorality.However，itisinademocraticsociety‘sinterestforschoolstoinculcatethedemocraticvaluesofrespectandtolerance，andperhapsevenadditionalvaluesthathumanizeandenrichasociety.
