At last one of them took a piece of paper and began to draw a cow. When he was just finishing his drawing, the waiter looked at it and ran out of the restaurant.

Passage Two
Few people now remember the sinking of the great passenger ship Colossus exactly sixty years ago. The number of people who were actually saved from her was small, and some of those have died in the years since, so that those who are still alive today can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Then you will easily understand why I have been asked to write about that sad day in 1912. The Collossus, then the largest ship in the world, was thought by people at that time to be unsinkable. Yet, when she hit an iceberg in thick fog in the North Atlantic Ocean, she actually disappeared in less than twenty minutes, taking nearly fifteen hundred people with her. My own life was saved by my youth. Being only a boy of fourteen, I was one of those lucky women and children who, according to custom, were allowed to get away first from the sinking ship. The selfless crew packed some sixty of us into a small boat and lowered it into the angry sea. But during the ship's last minutes, more and more passengers, as their last hope of escaping death, threw themselves wildly into the sea and tried to get on aboard our boat with the result that it finally turned over and we all found ourselves struggling for our lives in the water. But I was strong enough to swim for three hours in the icy water before a passing ship picked me up.

Passage Three
Have your ever wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Birds, especially seagulls, are very fond of locusts, but birds cannot easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the barks of tress.
An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies cannot find it, and it immediately swims away. Thus, it has existed up to now though it is not powerful at all.

Passage Four
1970 was World Conservation Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that governments would act quickly in order to "conserve" nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland. But now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives. We can't live without these things either. If we continue like this, we shall destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask "What must we do now?" The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on. In a small town in the United States, a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometres of their river. Young people may hear conservation through a record called " No One's Going to Change Our World". It was made by the Beetles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help conserve wild animals.
