  Part A

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in English. After you have heard each passage, interpret it into Chinese. Start interpreting at the signal…and stop it at the signal…You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now let’s begin Part A with the first passage.

  Passage 1:

Mr. President, I wish to thank you for your very gracious and eloquent remarks. At this very moment through the wonder of telecommunications, many people are hearing what we say today.//

Yes, right now the whole world is watching us. Though what we say here will soon be forgotten, what we do here will change the world.//

Given our distinct histories, geographies and cultures, it is inconceivable that we could see eye to eye on all issues. However, we do agree on the fundamental need for world peace.

  Passage 2:

There is no particular style to American negotiations. The way the negotiations are conducted will vary from one business to another and will depend upon the individuals involved.//

However, in spite of such difference, there are certain characteristics that appear to be fairly common to most American business negotiators.//

For example, Americans tend to be straight-forward, aggressive and pushy for clear-cut definitions of business terms.//

Although Americans have a reputation for making quick decisions, this is not always true when a corporation is involved in a major venture or a large project. Therefore, you should also be prepared for lengthy negotiations.

  Part B

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in Chinese. After you have heard each passage, interpret it into English. Start interpreting at the signal…and stop it at the signal…you may take notes while you’re listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now, let’s begin Part B with the first passage.

  Passage 1:

  Passage 2:

  Passage 1:

When traveling in the United States, you should know about finding a place to stay. Probably the best thing to do is to look in the Yellow Pages under Hotel, Motel or Lodging. You can compare the se4rvices offered in their advertisements.//

Motels and inns have plenty of parking space and lakes.//

Beds also go by many different names, such as single, double, queen and king size ones. Some hotels even offer their guests waterbeds, “Long boy” beds, rollaways or hide-a-beds.//

If you prefer camping to staying in hotels, you can camp in state and national parks, though, which generally have facilities for both tents and trailers.

  Passage 2:

I am speaking in strong protest against the construction of very tall buildings in the city, such as skyscrapers. Skyscrapers are a man-made hazard, which will have damaging effect on our environment and our lives.//

As an increasing number of ecologists point out, a cluster of high-rise buildings in a city often overburden public transportation and parking-lot capacities.//

Skyscrapers are lavish consumers of electric power. Moreover, skyscrapers block bird flyways, and obstruct air traffic.//

I think many architects build skyscrapers for personal ambition, at the cost of the environment. To protect our environment for us and for our children, we should stop our cities form growing any higher.
