  Part A

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in English. After you have heard each sentence or paragraph, interpret it into Chinese. Start interpreting at the signal…and stop it at the signal…You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now let us begin Part A with the first passage.

  Passage 1:

Ladies and Gentlemen: I have not come to China to hold forth on what divides us, but to build on what binds us. I have not come to dwell on a closed-door past, but to urge that Americans and Chinese look to the beautiful future.//

We must always be realistic about our relationship, frankly acknowledging the fundamental differences in ideology between our two societies. Let us not be dominated by these differences.//

If we were to ask citizens all over this world what they desire most for their children, and for their children’s children, their answer, in whatever language, would likely be the same: We want peace, freedom, and a better life.//

Like China, our people see the future in the eyes of our children. And like China, we respect our elders. To be as good as our fathers and mothers, we must be better.

  Passage 2:

What is time? Is it a thing to be saved or spent or wasted, like money? Or is it something we have no control over, like the weather? Or is it something too valuable to lose, like one’s life?//

Benjamin Franklin was right when he expressed this view: “Do you love life? Then do not waste time, for that is the stuff life is made of.” We Americans see time as an extremely valuable resource.//

We Americans also believe that time is a limited resource, and therefore we try to conserve and manage it. We often attend seminars or read books on time management, hoping that we will organize our time better.//

Professionals carry around pocket planners some in electronic form to keep track of appointments and deadlines. All in all, we do all we can to squeeze more life out of our time.

  Part B

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in Chinese. After you have each sentence or paragraph, interpret it into English. Start interpreting at the signal…and stop it at the signal…You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now, let us begin Part B with the first passage.

  Passage 1

“One world, one dream” reflects our desire / aspiration to host a great Olympic Games in Beijing, a city that boasts both ancient culture and modern charm.//

The three themes of our bid are: Green Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics and the People’s Olympics. Our goal is to spread the Olympic Ideals among our people, especially young people.//

We will work with the International Olympic Committee, the National Olympic Committees of different countries, as well as other international sports organizations to establish an open and effective working relationship.//

Confucius, an ancient Chinese sage, said, “Isn’t it a great pleasure to have friends coming from afar!” We are looking forward to receiving all guests from every corner of the world in Beijing in the year 2008.

  Passage 2:

How should a country’s human rights conditions be determined? In my opinion, they should be determined based on whether or not the general public of the country can enjoy political, economic, cultural, and educational and subsistence rights.//

As China is a developing country, its human rights situation has a two-fold meaning: Firstly, our human rights conditions are developing and improving; and secondly, as they are still in the process of development, some problems unavoidably exist / arise.//

An overseas friend told me that after he visited Beijing he discovered that people there would dare say anything: They talked about the government’s policies, and praised or criticized them.//

Therefore, I’d say that anyone who knows about Chinese history believes that the current human rights situation in China is the best in history.
