Part A

　　Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in English. After you have heard each sentence or paragraph, interpret it into Chinese. 　　Passage 1:

　　In most cultures, meals may have certain form that makes people know what to expect. When the English see tea, or when Americans see coffee, they know dinner is over.//

　　While American Chinese food may have been adapted to American tastes, it has not been adapted to American form. Americans who are accustomed to a main course topped off by a big dessert often do not know when the Chinese meal is over.//

　　Generally speaking, dinners are much less formal and elaborate in the United States than in China. In China, the number of different dishes served at each meal is really impressive. It is impossible to finish everything.//

　　In the United States, when guests come to a home for dinner, the host or hostess usually serves one main dish, and one dessert. Guests may very likely consume all that is offered.

　　For so many years in times of calm and in times of challenge, Americans have gathered for this ceremony. For over two millennia, Christmas has carried the message that we can always live in hope.//

　　In this season, we celebrate with our families, and deeply miss family members no longer with us. Thousands of families are still grieving over the terrible losses that came to them from the September 11 attack on New York.//

　　My wife and I wish every American family the blessings of the season. And now we have the honor of lighting the National Christmas Tree. Now, please join us in the countdown.//

　　Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the Chinese government, today I am very glad to be here to address the conference on some of the practice of the Chinese government ini the protection of children and related international cooperation.//

　　While devoting themselves to children’s protection and development in an effective manner, the Chinese Government has taken an active part in global and regional international cooperation and exchanges.//

　　For years, China has achieved great success through cooperation and exchange with the UN Children’s Fund, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) and the World Health Organization(WHO) in its work to protect children.//

　　The Chinese Government will further give priority to children’s education in the promotion of education in general to ensure a fast development of children’s education in China, thus making it close to the standard of developed countries / so as to catch up with those of developed countries.

　　上海正以它独特的海派文化和竞争优势吸引着众多国内外人才来此大展宏图，为上海做出他们的贡献。//

　　相信在我们的共同努力下，上海这座国际大都市必定能在不久的将来发展成为国际金融贸易和航运中心。

　　In the last 20 years, China has remained / been one of the fastest growing economies in the world. (Meanwhile,) Shanghai is know as the most attractive cities in China’s economic development. This has amazed the whole world.//

　　The distinct historical position of Shanghai, its economic strength of vigorous development and particularly the rapid rise of Pudong New Area have added a lot to the competitiveness of Shanghai.//

　　Shanghai, with its unique local cultures and competitive strength, is now attracting a growing number of talents from all walks of life at home and broad to fulfill their ambitions here, thus making their due contributions to the city in return.//

　　It is expected that with our joint efforts, Shanghai, as an (international) cosmopolis is bound / sure to become / develop into an international financial, trade and shipping center in the near future.
