Study Helps Predict Big Mediterranean Quake
Scientists have found evidence that an overlooked fault in the eastern Mediterranean is likely to produce an earthquake and tsunami every 800 years as powerful as the one that destroyed Alexandria in AD 365.
Using radiocarbon dating techniques, simulations and computer models, the researchers recreated the ancient disaster in order to identify the responsible fault.“We are saying there is probably a repeat time of 800 years for this kind of earthquake。”said Ms.Beth Shaw,an earthquake scientist at the Uni~ versity of Cambridge, who led the study.Scientists study past earthquakes in order to determine the future possibility of similar large shocks.
Identifying the fault for the AD 365 earthquake and tsunami is important for the tens of millions of people in the region,Ms.Shaw said. The fault close to the southwest coast of Crete last produced a big enough quake to generate a tsunami about l 300,which means the next powerful one could come in the next l00 years, she added in a telephone interview.
Ms.Shaw and her colleagues calculate the likely intervals by measuring the motion of either side of the fauIt to find how often such large earthquakes would have to occur to account for that level of motion。she said.Their computer model suggested an 8 magnitude quake on the fault would produce a tsunami that floods the coastal regions of Alexandria and North Africa, the southern coast of Greece and Sicily all the way up the Adriati to Dubrovnik. This would be similar to the ancient quake in AD 365 that caused widespread destruction in much of Greece and unleashed a tsunami that flooded Alex— andria and the Nile Delta, likely killing tens of thousands of people, she said.

An in—car computer system can issue an alert or even lock up the ignition system if the driver seems over-the—limit可知若司机酒精过量,车内的电脑系统可发出警告,甚至可以锁住引擎,所以C项错误。 A concept car…has a breathalyzer-like detection system可知概念车有类似酒精测量器的装置. The car’s sensors check odors inside the car…traces of alcoh01.An in-car computer system can issue an alert…
Other carmakers have developed similar detection systems.Volvo has developed a breathalyzer attached to a car’s seat belt that drivers must blow into before the engine wilI start可知,沃尔沃公司也发明了一种相类似的酒精检测装置,安装在保险带上,所以B项正确,A项错误。
根据第四段…camera that tracks drivers’alertness by monitoring their eyes…sound an alarm and issue a spoken warning…if it judges that the driver needs to…rest可知,相机跟踪司机的眼睛的活动从而监测司机是否保持清醒状态,如果发现司机需要停车休息,便发出警告,所以本题选A。
The car technology is still in development…Doi says the combination of differ— ent detection systems should improve the overall effectiveness of the technology可知监测技术仍然在发展之中,使用不同的监测系统应能改进这项技术的整体有效性,所以A项和C项都错误。 Nissan has no specific timetable for marketing the system, but aims to use technology to cut the numbet of fatalities involving its vehicles to half l995 levels by
The car’s seat belt can also tighten if drowsiness is detected, while an external camera checks that the car is keeping to its lane properly可知若探知司机昏昏欲睡,安全带会收紧,而外部的相机也会检查汽车是否偏离路线,所以A项和C项正确。根据本段第二句…the alcohol odor sensor, should be improved…
It’s no wonder that when most people think about viruses, finding wavs to steer clear of viruses is what’s on people’s minds意为:难怪大多数人一提到病毒,首先想到的如何避开病毒,所以C项正确。A项和D项内容及8项they are invisible文中没有提及。
They are putting viruses to work, teaching them to build some of the world’s smallest rechargeable batteries可知科学家们用病毒来制造最小的充电电池,所以C项正确。
As these devices shrink, ordinary batteries won’t be small enough to fit in— side可推断shrink此处意为“缩小”,所以D项expand“扩大,增大”为正确答案。
Belcher’s model battery,a metallic disk completely built by viruses…inside, its components are very small—so tiny you can only see them with a powerful microscope可知Belcher制作的电池外部是金属,内部是由病毒构成的部件,所以A项错误,D项正确。
根据文章最后一段倒数第二句…you could probably fit about lo of these virus-built battery parts, side to side, across one hair可知每根头发可以并列排放10个病毒电池部件,故本题选A。
manage to do sth. We can now watch electricity as it flows through even the tiniest circuits与D项内容呼应,故本题选D。
本句中and连接两个并列短语,一个是measuring subtle changes in the magnetic field of an object,所以填入的内容也为分词形式,只有E项符合,在内容上E项也补充说明了他们如何将电流可视化。
由for example可推断,此处要填入与microscopic cracks in an airplane’s fuselage并列的句子成分,只有F项符合。
Every living thing has what scientists call a biological clock that controls behavior为主旨句。
根据语法,本处后为一个短语the number of hours of daylight,故A项、B项和D项都不正确,因这些词都是引导句子,只有C项because of可接短语。
四个选项A项months“月”,B项days“天,白昼”,C项minutes“分钟”,D项weeks“周”,由后面一句in the longer hours of daylight可推断只有B项合适。

四个选项A项flight“飞行,迁徙”,B项fly“飞行”,C项movements“运动”,D项transportation“运输,运输工具”,由下一句when the time of the flight has ended,已经提示答案为A项。
四个选项A项prevented from“被阻止”,B项ordered by“被指定,被命令”,C项helped by“被帮助”,D项intruded on“被干涉,被介入”,根据文意只有A项合适。
本句的主语a small group of cells为单数形式,所以排除A项和C项。
前文a small group of cells已经明显提示本题应选C。
D项wake—up是名词,所以只有A项符合。
从句法结构来看,to accept the major change in work hours是本句的真正主语,而本处需要一个形式主语,所以只能选B。it takes+时间for sb.to do sth.
